Iberdrola activates its first battery energy storage system in Ireland

Storage

Ireland – In the east of Ireland, Iberdrola has activated its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on a commercial scale.

Following success in the DS3 Capped System Services Contract auction in 2019, the 50MW Gorman BESS in County Meath will provide system services to EirGrid for six years, helping to secure and sustain Ireland’s electricity network.

Iberdrola’s firsts

The battery, which is located on a site the size of a football field, is made up of more than 4,000 battery modules distributed among 16 battery containers, helping to balance supply and demand and guaranteeing additional green electricity is available when needed.

The Gorman battery project, with a total investment of €28 million, represents a number of firsts for Iberdrola, including the first battery project in Ireland, the first operational commercial-scale battery anywhere in the world, and the first renewable energy construction project in Ireland in more than 25 years.
