BASF’s PuriCycle to purify waste plastics pyrolysis feeds

Chemcycling

Germany – PuriCycle, a new line of cutting-edge, high-performance products from BASF, is introduced for the purification of the most intricate waste plastics pyrolysis feeds.

The PuriCycle portfolio includes cutting-edge catalysts and adsorbents created to selectively eliminate or transform a variety of impurities in pyrolysis oils and enable the processing of circular plastics streams downstream. Customers who work with PuriCycle can benefit from high efficiency purification and upgrading solutions, meet industry compositional compliance standards, and have more flexibility in the chemical recycling of plastics.

Purification of pyrolysis oils

Pyrolysis oils, a secondary raw material produced by chemically recycling plastic waste and fed into the initial stages of the production process for new plastics, are purified by PuriCycle. One of the most difficult technical tasks in chemical plastics recycling is the purification of pyrolysis oils produced from waste plastics. Higher levels of reactive components like dienes, as well as impurities like halogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur compounds, complicate downstream use and place strict restrictions on further processing of such streams in the creation of new materials.
