Belgium – EU financing totaling 9.6 million euros is given to Fluxys, North Sea Port, and ArcelorMittal Belgium for the Ghent Carbon Hub.
The Ghent Carbon Hub is designed as an open access hub for the transportation and liquefaction of industrially captured CO2, buffer storage, and loading of ships with liquid CO2 for long-term storage downstream.
These EU funds are being utilized for extensive research on the creation of a CO2 terminal that is open to the public and a CO2 pipeline network that connects to Wallonia.
Feasibility study
The feasibility study got underway earlier this year. The Ghent Carbon Hub will be able to process 6 million tons of CO2 annually, or around 15% of Belgium’s industrial CO2 emissions. The study is a significant, follow-up stage before the ultimate investment choice, which is anticipated in 2025, and the start of construction, which is anticipated in 2027.
The study for this multimodal CO2 infrastructure project is supported by the European Commission, which is encouraging, according to Maarten den Dekker, project leader for energy transition & sustainability at North Sea Port. With this project, North Sea Port will be recognized as a CO2 hub in Europe.
