The Netherlands-Germany alliance targets green hydrogen import

Hydrogen

The Netherlands/Germany – The Netherlands and Germany are uniting forces to spearhead the import of green hydrogen, a pivotal step in revolutionizing industries and transport sectors for a sustainable future.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate made this announcement during King Willem-Alexander’s working visit to North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany.

Both countries are committing 300 million euros to facilitate the import of renewable hydrogen, emphasizing production through sources like wind and solar energy. The overarching objective is to position hydrogen as a linchpin in driving sustainability across industries and transportation.

H2Global subsidy project

The joint import initiative is slated to commence in 2027, marking the Netherlands’ participation in the German H2Global subsidy project. Since last year, the German government, in collaboration with major energy companies globally, has been securing ten-year supply contracts for green hydrogen to optimize costs.

This collaborative effort aligns with the strategic vision of the Dutch government to intensify cooperation with Germany in the realm of hydrogen. Given their substantial hydrogen requirements within Europe, both countries anticipate becoming key players in the Northwest European hydrogen market.
