Eni’s Versalis starts construction of chemical plastics recycling plant

Chemcycling

Italy – Versalis, the chemical company under the Eni umbrella, has initiated the construction of a groundbreaking demonstration plant in Mantua, Italy.

This facility will serve as the breeding ground for their proprietary Hoop technology, designed for the chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste. Hoop is the result of a collaboration between Versalis and the Italian engineering company S.R.S. (Research and Development Services) and aims to revolutionize recycling by converting mixed plastic waste into raw materials for the production of new virgin polymers.

Hoop

Hoop technology, named to signify circularity, has integrated seamlessly with the plastic pyrolysis product purification technologies of Technip Energies (T.EN), a prominent engineering and technology company specializing in the energy transition. Together, they are forging a powerful platform for advanced chemical recycling.

The Hoop technology demonstration plant boasts an impressive capacity, capable of handling 6,000 tonnes of secondary raw material. It is scheduled to be operational by the close of 2024.
