Equinor and Aker Solutions collaborate on carbon reduction at Mongstad

CCUS

Norway – Aker Solutions has secured a crucial contract from Equinor to conduct a feasibility study for the Mongstad Industrial Transformation project in Vestland county, Norway.

The primary objective of the feasibility study is to devise innovative solutions aimed at drastically reducing CO2 emissions from the existing Mongstad refinery. The envisioned transformation seeks to establish a new low-carbon industry cluster, showcasing environmentally sustainable, technically sound, and economically viable alternatives.

The scope of the study encompasses the development of a new greenfield facility dedicated to producing blue hydrogen from natural and refinery fuel gas, complemented by a robust carbon capture and export infrastructure. Additionally, the project includes plans for a facility to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from municipal solid waste, with an ambitious target of achieving over 70% reduction in emissions.

The study will explore diverse options for future operations, encompassing gasification, CO2 storage, and project integration.

Mongstad emissions

Mongstad, as one of Europe’s medium-sized refineries, currently emits approximately 1.7 million tons of CO2 annually. Equinor’s vision for the Mongstad refinery underscores its commitment to significantly curbing emissions, aligning with broader objectives of environmental stewardship and sustainability.
