Belgium – Volvo Trucks opens its first ever battery assembly plant. The plant in Ghent will supply ready-to-use batteries for the company’s all-electric heavy trucks.
The first Volvo Trucks battery assembly plant in Belgium will supply customised batteries for the company’s heavy duty electric trucks. The new battery plant will assemble Samsung SDI cells and modules into customised battery packs for Volvo Trucks’ range of electric heavy trucks: Volvo FH, Volvo FM and Volvo FMX. Series production will start in the third quarter of this year.
Each battery pack has a capacity of 90 kWh and the customer can choose to have up to six battery packs (540 kWh) in a truck. The number of batteries depends on the specific range and load capacity of each customer.
The batteries from Volvo Trucks are designed so that they can later be overhauled, reconditioned and reused. The factory itself runs on 100 per cent renewable energy.

With the production of three heavy-duty all-electric models starting this year in Europe, Volvo Trucks will offer a total of six electric truck models worldwide. From urban distribution and waste management to regional transport and construction.
