The Netherlands – The largest operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in The Netherlands, named Castor, has been energized and is poised to transform the Dutch electricity market.
The project, delivered by Rolls-Royce as a turn-key solution, boasts a capacity of 30.7 megawatts and an energy throughput of 62.6 megawatt-hours.
Situated in the energy hub of Vlissingen-Oost, Castor aims to accelerate the stable integration of renewable energy into the Dutch electricity market. The utility-scale energy storage system is a crucial component in the broader strategy to enhance the reliability and efficiency of renewable energy sources.
Rolls-Royce technology
At the heart of the project lies the mtu EnergyPack QG, Rolls-Royce’s advanced battery system, complemented by the multi-level control system EnergetIQ. This comprehensive solution includes civil works, electrical integration, and automation, ensuring optimal performance and reliability. The successful installation positions Castor as one of the largest battery projects in the European Union.
