Sweden – Vattenfall and Borealis have inked their first long-term renewable hydropower purchase agreement (PPA) in Sweden.
Vattenfall started supplying Borealis’ operations in Stenungsund with 175 GWh per year of renewable energy from hydropower plants along the Lule River in northern Sweden.
The long-term PPA, set to run for ten years, signifies a strategic partnership between Vattenfall and Borealis in advancing renewable energy adoption. By leveraging Vattenfall’s hydropower expertise, Borealis aims to significantly reduce its Scope 2 emissions, contributing to global decarbonization efforts.
Reducing emissions
The renewable electricity supplied through the PPA is anticipated to curtail approximately 6,800 metric tons per year of Borealis’ Scope 2 emissions from its Stenungsund facility. Over the ten-year duration of the agreement, this translates to a substantial reduction of 68,250 metric tonnes in greenhouse gas emissions.
