Finland – Signify, HEINEKEN, Nobian, and Philips, a consortium of Netherlands-based companies, are celebrating the inauguration of Finland’s largest active wind farm.
The Mutkalampi wind farm will provide a renewable electricity guarantee to the consortium, delivering 330 GWh per year, equivalent to powering 40,000 households. This renewable electricity will contribute to reducing over 230,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
In a groundbreaking move, the consortium entered into a 10-year agreement in 2020 to source renewable electricity from the Mutkalampi wind farm through a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement. The electricity is physically supplied to the Finnish grid, while the consortium members benefit from Guarantees of Origin, ensuring income stability for the renewable project and securing clean energy for the consortium.
Largest operating wind farm
The facility will provide operational electricity for Signify’s operations in the EU, excluding Poland, where a separate agreement is in place. The consortium aims to reduce emissions at double the pace of the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 degrees scenario by the end of 2025. The wind farm in Mutkalampi marks a significant step toward their global goal of net-zero emissions in scopes 1 and 2 by 2030.
Nobian’s Director Energy, Johan Hospers, highlighted the importance of securing a share of the wind farm’s output to support their sustainability targets outlined in the “Grow Greener Together” strategy. The long-term commitment from Nobian and its consortium partners exemplifies industry’s contribution to a greener future and a sustainable energy system.
The Mutkalampi wind farm, developed and operated by Neoen, stands as Finland’s largest operating wind farm. The facility showcases the commitment of the consortium to advancing the clean energy transition and marks a significant milestone in promoting renewable electricity generation.
