EuropeWave unveils successful wave energy projects

Renewables

United Kingdom The successful bidders in EuropeWave’s pioneering Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) process have been announced.

The initial call for tenders drew a large response, and a panel of independent experts has now selected seven successful project teams to share €2.4 million in funding to further develop their wave energy device concepts in the first half of 2022.

Wave Energy Scotland (WES) and the Basque Energy Agency (BEA) collaborate on the EuropeWave project, a five-year R&D funding program (EVE). The European Commission’s Horizon 2020 program will match-fund this transnational collaboration to procure the most promising wave energy technology solutions from developers in Europe and beyond.

The seven successful projects (subject to contract) are:

  • Waveram: The Waveram
  • Mocean Energy: Blue Horizon 250
  • IDOM Consulting, Engineering, Architecture SAU: MARMOK Atlantic
  • CETO Wave Energy Ireland: ACHIEVE
  • Bombora Wave Power Europe: emWave
  • Arrecife Energy Systems SL: Trimaran
  • AMOG Consulting: Sea-Saw WEC

There will then be a second phase in which project teams will carry out more extensive design and testing of five of the most promising technologies. During the final phase of EuropeWave, three devices will be tested off the coasts of the Basque Country and Scotland in 2025.

When it comes to pre-commercial procurement, a competitive selection process is combined with a rigorous use of technical and economic performance metrics. It will speed up the development of wave energy and reduce costs. In this way, Europe’s net-zero future can be realized by utilizing wave energy.
