Dutch King inaugurates Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm

Renewables

The Netherlands – Dutch King Willem-Alexander officially inaugurated Hollandse Kust Zuid, the world’s first subsidy-free offshore wind farm. The wind farm is located in the North Sea, 18-36 kilometers off the Dutch coast between the towns of Scheveningen and Zandvoort.

The 139 turbines have a total capacity of 1.5 GW, making it one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world. Its annual electricity production is expected to equal the consumption of 1.5 million households. Hollands Kust Zuid is owned by Vattenfall, BASF and Allianz. The wind farm is expected to be fully operational in 2024 and will be serviced out of the port of IJmuiden.

The wind farm is a significant milestone for the energy transition in the Netherlands and around the world. It demonstrates that offshore wind can now be developed and operated without government subsidies. This is an important step towards making offshore wind more competitive and accessible to more countries.

Hollandse Kust Zuid is a significant step forward for the energy transition and for the offshore wind industry. It is a demonstration of what can be achieved when government, industry, and investors work together to make renewable energy more competitive and accessible.

Energy transition

Hollandse Kust Zuid has the potential to make a significant impact on the energy transition in the Netherlands and around the world. By demonstrating that offshore wind can now be developed and operated without government subsidies, the wind farm is helping to make offshore wind more competitive and accessible to more countries.

In addition, the wind farm is expected to reduce the Netherlands’ reliance on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. The electricity generated from Hollandse Kust Zuid will help to power Dutch homes and businesses with clean, renewable energy.
