Dutch offshore wind-powered gas platform approved

Oil&Gas Renewables

The Netherlands – The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate has given ONE-Dyas permission to develop a gas field whose platform will be powered entirely by electricity generated by the Riffgat offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

The Dutch government has approved the production of natural gas from the N05-A field and surrounding fields in the North Sea with the final permit. Borkum, Rottumerplaat, and Schiermonnikoog are all about 20 kilometers north of the N05-A platform.

The N05-A platform will run entirely on wind energy generated by the nearby Riffgat wind farm, further reducing carbon emissions. It contributes actively to the energy transition and the achievement of the Climate Agreement’s goals in a safe and responsible manner.

Environmental impact

The Commission for Environmental Assessment approved the project’s final environmental impact report on February 18, 2022, and acknowledged the project’s utility and necessity. According to ONE-Dyas, the Commission also expressed its gratitude for the platform’s electrification, which will help reduce emissions.

By the end of 2024, ONE-Dyas plans to deliver the first natural gas to Dutch and German households. The GEMS area, which is roughly 20 to 100 kilometers north of the Ems estuary, includes the N05-A project.
