Yara pioneers world’s first ammonia-powered container ship

Germany – Yara Clean Ammonia, North Sea Container Line, and Yara International are set to embark on a historic journey with the development of the world’s first container ship fueled by clean ammonia.

Named Yara Eyde, this vessel is poised to redefine maritime sustainability by creating an emission-free sea route between Norway and Germany.

“Yara Eyde will be the world’s first container ship running on clean ammonia and is a cross-sector collaboration enabling large-scale emission reductions ahead of the critical 2030 climate targets,” declares Svein Tore Holsether, President and CEO of Yara International.

With the global shipping sector contributing a staggering 706 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in the past year, collaborative efforts across value chains become imperative to achieve the 1.5°C goal by 2030.

Connecting Germany and Norway

Yara Eyde is strategically optimized for the trade corridor between Norway and Germany, connecting major ports such as Oslo, Porsgrunn, Hamburg, and Bremerhaven. Starting in 2026, Norwegian companies can engage in emissions-free trade, with Yara International actively participating as a cargo owner. This initiative will see 11,000 tonnes of CO2 per year reduced in scope 3 emissions, with fertilizer shipments from Porsgrunn to Germany taking a giant leap towards sustainability.

Financial backing

Enova’s substantial financial support of just over NOK 40 million has been a decisive factor in turning Yara Eyde from vision to reality. This backing underscores the importance of public and private collaboration in driving sustainable innovations within the maritime industry.
