Veidekke and Norwegian Hydrogen reimagine asphalt production

Hydrogen

Norway – Veidekke and Norwegian Hydrogen have inked a deal, paving the way for the world’s first large-scale production of emission-free asphalt, powered by green hydrogen.

Asphalt, the ubiquitous black ribbon binding our roads, traditionally relies on fossil fuels for its production, spewing harmful emissions into the atmosphere. In Kristiansund, Norway, the Veidekke has already converted a factory to run solely on hydrogen, producing 3,000 tons of emission-free asphalt in 2023.

The ambition doesn’t stop there. To fuel this clean asphalt revolution, Veidekke has partnered with Norwegian Hydrogen, a green hydrogen pioneer. In Hellesylt, further south in Norway, Norwegian Hydrogen is constructing a facility capable of churning out over 400 tons of green hydrogen annually, starting in 2024. This clean fuel will be the lifeblood of Veidekke’s Kristiansund plant, ensuring a steady supply for its green asphalt production.

Climate dividends

Norwegian asphalt production currently emits around 400,000 tons of CO2 annually. By switching to green hydrogen, Veidekke and Norwegian Hydrogen aim to slash these emissions drastically, contributing to a cleaner future.
