bp to deploy BASF carbon capture tech at Teesside hydrogen project

United Kingdom – bp and BASF have entered a license agreement for the deployment of BASF’s gas treating technology, OASE white.

The collaboration aims to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions during the production of hydrogen at bp’s proposed blue hydrogen facility in Teesside, known as H2Teesside.

H2Teesside project is aspiring to become one of the UK’s largest blue hydrogen production facilities. With a targeted hydrogen production capacity of 1.2 gigawatts by 2030, equivalent to over 10% of the UK Government’s ambitious hydrogen target. Blue hydrogen, derived from natural gas, distinguishes itself by capturing and storing the generated carbon dioxide, contributing to a more sustainable energy future.

Capturing CO2

BASF’s OASE white gas treatment process involves adding an amine-based solvent agent to the gas stream, absorbing the CO2, and subsequently separating the components. The captured CO2 is then directed for storage, contributing to carbon-neutral practices.

The implementation of carbon capture technology at H2Teesside holds the promise of capturing and storing approximately two million tonnes of CO2 annually. This will be facilitated through the infrastructure provided by the bp-led Northern Endurance partnership, responsible for onshore and offshore infrastructure for carbon capture across Teesside and the Humber.
