Agfa and VITO partner on green hydrogen production

Hydrogen

Belgium – Agfa and VITO have joined forces to develop separator membranes for alkaline water electrolyzers.

Agfa’s GIGA-SCALES project received a significant boost with an €11 million grant from the EU Innovation Fund. This funding propels the establishment of Agfa’s ZIRFON membranes production plant, slated to revolutionize green hydrogen production. The plant’s operation, set for October 2025, marks a pivotal step towards achieving carbon neutrality.

Scalable solutions

With ZIRFON membranes already adopted by over 100 companies worldwide, Agfa’s production expansion signifies a monumental shift in the green hydrogen landscape. The upcoming industrial unit is poised to deliver 20 gigawatts per year of alkaline water electrolysis, translating to a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions and driving global adoption of water electrolyzers.
