Industry majors collaborate on CO2 capture and storage in Belgium

Belgium – Heidelberg Materials, Fluxys, and Equinor have joined forces to establish a comprehensive value chain for CO2 capture, transport, and storage.

The primary goal of the collaboration is to capture and store over 800 thousand tons of CO2 annually at Heidelberg Materials’ site in Antoing, Belgium, starting from 2029. Through the project, known as Anthemis, Heidelberg Materials seeks to significantly reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change.

Fluxys, through its involvement in the c-grid project, is instrumental in developing a pipeline network for transporting captured CO2 within Belgium. Equinor plans to transport the captured CO2 via a thousand-kilometer pipeline, dubbed the CO2 Highway Europe, from Belgium to a permanent storage facility off the coast of Norway. This innovative approach utilizes existing infrastructure and advanced transportation technology to ensure efficient and sustainable CO2 storage.

Capturing CO2 on large scale

By capturing and storing CO2 on a large scale, the project not only helps industries transition to more sustainable practices but also demonstrates the viability of CCS technology in combating climate change. Additionally, the project serves as a model for international cooperation in addressing global environmental challenges.
