SSAB leads FFS2 project for fossil-free steelmaking in Finland

Finland – SSAB initiates the “Towards Fossil-Free Steel Phase 2” (FFS2) joint project in Finland aimed to revolutionize steelmaking practices.

Following the accomplishments of the previous FFS project, which concluded in 2023, the FFS2 initiative embarks on a fresh journey with a renewed consortium. With a focus on cutting-edge research initiatives, the project aims to delve deeper into advancing fossil-free steelmaking technologies.

SSAB’s planned production system in Raahe underscores key research areas, including thin-slab casting, direct rolling technology, and electric melting of recycled scrap steel. Noteworthy findings from the completed FFS project, such as the innovative use of biochar for slag foaming, demonstrate a commitment to sustainable practices.

Collaborative endeavors

The FFS2 consortium comprises ten companies and three prominent research institutions, supported by Business Finland and coordinated by environmental consultant Macon Oy. This collaborative effort signifies a collective commitment to driving advancements in fossil-free steelmaking.

The steel industry holds economic importance in Finland, employing thousands and contributing significantly to carbon dioxide emissions. With the FFS2 project, the steel industry aims to enhance competitiveness while curbing carbon emissions, aligning with sustainability goals for a greener future.
