The Netherlands – HES International and EMC Cement have entered into a partnership to construct a fully electric cement factory in the port of Amsterdam.
The cornerstone of this project lies in EMC Cement’s revolutionary technology, known as mechanical activation, which enables the utilization of natural volcanic rock to replace up to 70 percent of traditional Portland cement. Additionally, secondary materials from concrete recycling and other minerals like fly ash or steel slag can be integrated into the manufacturing process, further enhancing sustainability and resource efficiency.
The factory is expected to achieve a 90 percent reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional cement production methods. Moreover, the use of mechanical activation will result in a substantial decrease of one million tons in CO2 emissions annually.
Implementation and expansion
With an anticipated operational timeline set for the end of 2025 to the beginning of 2026, HES International and EMC Cement are on track to realize their vision of sustainable cement production in Amsterdam. To expedite product availability, the companies plan to install a smaller EMC facility at the HES site during the construction phase of the main factory.
