Gunvor and VARO partner on SAF manufacturing in Rotterdam

Sustainable energy

The Netherlands – The expansive Gunvor Energy Rotterdam (GER) site will house large-scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) manufacturing thanks to a partnership between Gunvor and VARO Energy.

350 kpta will be the facility’s maximum production capacity; roughly 70% of that will be SAF, with the remaining portion being a blend of bio-naphtha and bio-propane. With complete flexibility between 100% SAF and 100% HVO as well as cutting-edge pretreatment capabilities, the VARO facility will be at the forefront of the SAF sector.

Key location

The Gunvor site offers VARO a key location for the project in the center of Europe’s energy hub, and GER’s current industrial infrastructure will support its quick growth. By starting production in Q4 2026, the facility will be able to contribute to the anticipated large increase in demand for European SAF. Gunvor will additionally take part through an operations and maintenance contract as well as other expenditures.

The SAF that will be generated will supply this to important airline customers and has, on average, 90% fewer Green House Gas (GHG) emissions than conventional jet fuel.
