Germany – RWE, in collaboration with partner companies, will repower wind farms in Lesse and Barbecke, Germany.
RWE’s initiative involves the dismantling of 17 older wind turbines and replacing them with 11 new, more powerful ones. By leveraging larger rotor blades, the company aims to capture more wind and substantially increase electricity production. Despite utilizing fewer turbines, the repowered wind farms are expected to boost capacity from 30.6 to 61.8 megawatts (MW), marking a substantial leap in energy output.
With the capacity to supply the equivalent of 43,500 households with green electricity, the initiative not only contributes to climate action but also generates revenue for local communities. Through the RWE climate bonus, municipalities stand to receive up to €280,000 annually, fostering community development and supporting vital local facilities.
Leveraging wind conditions
RWE strategically selected Lesse and Barbecke for repowering, leveraging favorable wind conditions and existing infrastructure. The project involves planning and execution, with a focus on environmental sustainability and resource efficiency.
