The Netherlands – The Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm is pioneering a sustainable approach to wind turbine installation with the introduction of reusable monopile covers. Developed by Vattenfall and CCM B.V., these durable covers offer protection during the crucial stage between foundation laying and tower installation.
Traditionally, monopile covers were disposable, contributing to environmental waste and increased costs. However, the new covers designed for the Hollandse Kust Zuid project are constructed from fibre-reinforced polyester panels, strengthened with steel beams and bolts. Not only are they lightweight and durable, but they also allow daylight and air to pass through, addressing previous limitations of tarpaulin and aluminium covers.
Circular economy contribution
CCM’s innovative business model includes repurchasing the covers after use, further reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability. With panels expected to last up to 15 years, efforts are underway to recycle materials effectively, contributing to a circular economy and minimizing environmental impact.
