Iberdrola and O2 Telefónica to power mobile networks with Baltic Eagle OWF

Renewables

Germany – Iberdrola Deutschland and O2 Telefónica have forged a strategic partnership through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) to harness renewable energy from the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.

The primary goal of the partnership is to facilitate a transition towards more sustainable and intelligent energy supply for O2 Telefónica’s mobile phone stations.

The Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, scheduled to be operational by the end of 2024, will utilize 50 Vestas 9.5 MW wind turbines installed on monopile foundations. These turbines will harness the power of wind to generate clean electricity, which will be seamlessly integrated into O2 Telefónica’s mobile network infrastructure. Furthermore, the Ostwind 2 grid connection will ensure efficient transmission of renewable energy to power mobile phone stations across Germany.

PPA

The implementation of the PPA between Iberdrola and O2 Telefónica signifies a shift towards decarbonizing the telecommunications sector. By transitioning to renewable energy sources, O2 Telefónica not only reduces its environmental impact but also sets a precedent for other telecommunications companies to embrace sustainable energy solutions.
