Hollandse Kust Noord gets offshore solar power

Renewables

The Netherlands – In the Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm, Oceans of Energy will install and run offshore solar power. The installation of an offshore solar park in a wind farm with significant waves is new.

The wind farm will be operational by the end of 2023, while the offshore solar park will be realized in 2025. The infrastructure of the offshore energy system is better utilized when an offshore solar park and an offshore wind farm are combined. In order to effectively share the available ocean space, the solar panels will be positioned in the area between the offshore wind turbines.

World’s first

The Hollandse Kust Noord initiative by CrossWind is also novel in a number of other ways. For instance, it’s the first wind farm in the world to incorporate a megawatt-scale combination of battery storage and green hydrogen generation. To improve the airflow surrounding the wind turbine, specialized wake control technologies will also be created and tested.

Wind farm

The Hollandse Kust Noord farm is constructed and run by CrossWind, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco. At Egmond aan Zee, HKN is now being realized 18.5 kilometers offshore. Recently, the first wind turbine was put in place. Oceans of Energy is a startup that was established in 2016 and specializes on offshore solar energy in choppy waters. Oceans of Energy’s first industrial undertaking is Hollandse Kust Noord by Crosswind.
