Germany – Thyssengas and Stadtnetze Münster are coordinating the expansion plans for their respective pipeline networks in order to provide H2 delivery in the Münster region.
The city networks of Münster and Thyssengas are establishing the framework for attaching the long-distance gas pipeline to the local distribution system with the now-signed letter of intent. As a result, there is better planning and investment security for small and medium-sized businesses, municipalities, and the industrial sector.
Thyssengas hopes to create the framework for the Münsterland and Westphalia region’s hydrogen supply with the Coesfeld-Münster line project. A line to Hamm is expected to be operational as an extension by 2029, under the current state of planning, subject to the unmet needs for a national hydrogen core network, and dependent on the results of ongoing projects. A grid connection between Thyssengas and the Münster city grid is intended to run along the roads from Coesfeld to Hamm. The “GET H2” cluster and the anticipated north-south route between Wilhelmshaven and Cologne will then supply hydrogen to the area. The initial requests from the city of Münster to local businesses have demonstrated how much interest the local industrial companies have exhibited in these ideas.
H2 clusters
Thyssengas initially identified six prospective zones, or “H2 clusters,” in close collaboration with the businesses in its network area. These are dispersed over the areas of Emsland, Münsterland, Ruhrgebiet, and Rhineland. Numerous energy- and emission-intensive businesses located in the “Münster-Hamm” cluster between Münster, Gütersloh, Warstein, and Dortmund aspire to decarbonize their energy supply in the future with the aid of hydrogen. The H2 clusters serve as the embryonic stage of the construction of an integrated H2 infrastructure.
