Bosch recycles platinum from fuel cells to slash carbon footprint

Bosch, the global technology giant, is embarking on a groundbreaking mission to revolutionize the recycling of fuel cell stacks, with an ambitious aim to recover at least 95% of precious platinum group metals (PGMs) used in these critical components.

Platinum is a key catalyst in fuel cells, accelerating the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity. By perfecting this recycling process, Bosch intends to not only make fuel cells more economically viable but also significantly reduce the environmental impact associated with platinum mining.

Strategic Partnership with Hylane

The first major step in Bosch’s recycling plan involves a strategic partnership with Hylane, a mobility provider based in Cologne. The collaboration centers around the potential buyback of fuel cell stacks by Bosch at the end of their service life. Hylane rents out hydrogen trucks equipped with Bosch fuel cell drive systems, creating a sustainable ecosystem for hydrogen-based transportation.
