Sweden – An agreement has been reached between H2 Green Steel (H2GS) and Swedish shipping business Gotland business to investigate the feasibility of establishing a production facility with the ability to supply green hydrogen to a portion of Gotland Company’s fleet.
H2GS will conduct a technical and financial feasibility study in collaboration with Gotland Company to assess the viability of supplying green hydrogen, a fossil-free fuel, to Gotland Company’s future ships.
Horizon series ships
The Horizon series of two new ships being built by Gotland Company will be able to run on hydrogen gas. By 2030 at the latest, the objective is to have a minimum of one ship operational. The gas turbines used in the Horizon series will be so-called multifuel, allowing the ships to run on a variety of fossil-free fuels. It will take about 20,000 tonnes of hydrogen gas per year to run all of the traffic between Gotland and the mainland on hydrogen gas.
Feasibility assessment
The feasibility study is the first stage in supplying hydrogen as fuel to the ships operated by the Gotland Company on the route between the island of Gotland and the Swedish mainland. The feasibility assessment includes choosing locations for infrastructure to carry the hydrogen to the harbors as well as for hydrogen generation. About 300 MW of electrolyzer capacity is thought to be necessary.
