Bayer, E.ON, Iqony and Westenergie unite for German hydrogen project

Hydrogen

Germany – Bayer, E.ON, Iqony, and Westenergie – are joining forces to explore the development of a hydrogen cluster fueled by imported ammonia in Bergkamen, Germany.

By leveraging imported ammonia, the cluster has the potential to deliver substantial hydrogen volumes, exceeding what could be solely produced domestically from renewable sources. The plan involves a full-fledged hydrogen value chain, from ammonia procurement and cracking to pipeline transportation and delivery directly to Bayer’s Bergkamen Industrial Park. Notably, Iqony’s existing infrastructure for ammonia storage and transportation promises a smooth logistics operation.

Local support

Beyond technical feasibility, the partners recognize the crucial role of collaboration and shared vision. Bayer, as a future user, brings valuable insights into consumer needs, while E.ON’s expertise in energy networks and customer solutions ensures efficient distribution and marketing. Westenergie’s commitment to infrastructure development strengthens the project’s foundation, and local support from the city of Bergkamen and Unna district reinforces the regional significance of this initiative.

The potential impact of this hydrogen cluster holds the promise of accelerating Bergkamen’s decarbonization efforts, securing clean and affordable energy for local industries, and creating new jobs in the green energy sector.
