SABELLA and Nova secure berth at world’s largest tidal energy site in Wales

Renewables

United KingdomSABELLA and Nova Innovation have secured a 12MW berth at one of the world’s largest tidal energy sites off the coast of Holy Island, Anglesey, Wales.

Morlais is SABELLA and Nova Innovation’s first project win since announcing their collaboration on tidal energy site development in June 2021. Each company will build 6MW in the 12MW berth, which spans 0.65km2. A 12MW tidal turbine site could provide enough energy to power up to 10,000 homes per year.

Turbines in harmony with nature

Both SABELLA and Nova tidal turbines are completely submerged on the seabed and have no visual impact on the landscape. Because marine life can freely move around the technologies, they produce clean, predictable energy and work in harmony with nature.

Morlais tidal energy zone

The Morlais tidal energy zone is 35km2 in size and is located in the sea. Menter Môn is in charge of managing the site and allocating berths. The Welsh Government granted development consents for the 240MW site in December 2021. Natural Resources Wales has granted a marine licence allowing the installation of tidal turbines. The project will be built and operated in stages to allow for environmental monitoring of wildlife and habitat.

SABELLA and Nova Innovation have already begun surveys at Morlais, with the goal of installing their first turbines in 2023/24. SABELLA and Nova intend to expand on this initial project by combining expertise and developing additional tidal energy sites in the United Kingdom and France.
