Ørsted makes final investment decision for Hornsea 3 OWF

Renewables

United Kingdom – Ørsted has given the green light to Hornsea 3, slated to be the world’s single largest offshore wind farm with a staggering capacity of 2.9 GW.

The overarching goal of Hornsea 3 is to contribute significantly to the UK government’s ambitious target of having 50 GW of offshore wind in operation by 2030, aligning with the British Energy Security Strategy. By achieving a capacity of 2.9 GW, Hornsea 3 aims to power over 3.3 million UK homes, making a substantial impact on the nation’s clean energy landscape. The wind farm completion is expected around the end of 2027.

With all major contracts in place, including an agreement with Siemens Gamesa for SG 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines, Hornsea 3 is set to utilize cutting-edge technology for maximum efficiency. The collaboration with Siemens Gamesa ensures a robust supply chain, and the larger turbines, coupled with synergies from Hornsea 1 and 2, promise lower operating costs compared to previous projects.

Economic growth

Hornsea 3 is not merely about generating power; it’s a catalyst for change. The wind farm is projected to support up to 5,000 jobs during its construction phase and create an additional 1,200 permanent jobs directly and in the supply chain during its operational phase. The investment in the UK’s offshore wind supply chain is anticipated to run into billions of pounds, fostering economic growth and energy independence.
