VoltH2 and TÜV Nord develop hydrogen plant in Germany

Hydrogen

Germany – For the creation of a green hydrogen plant in Essen, Germany, VoltH2 will work with TÜV Nord Group. A component of the HyPerformer Region Rhein Ruhr is the collaborative initiative.

VoltH2 is building a network of renewable hydrogen production facilities. Currently, it has locations in Wilhelmshaven, Terneuzen, Delfzijl, and Vlissingen. These have a 500 MW maximum production capacity. In Essen, a fifth installation is currently being built. VoltH2 collaborates with EE Energy Engineers, the engineering division of TÜV Nord Group, on the construction of this factory. This new factory has already undergone a feasibility assessment. Beginning in 2022, VoltH2 has collaborated with EE Energy Engineers.

Rhein-Ruhr region

The undertaking is a part of the Rhein Ruhr HyPerformer Region. One of Germany’s three HyPerformer II winning regions is the Rhine-Ruhr region, which includes Essen. Ten projects in the area for the construction of hydrogen filling stations and electrolysers are now eligible for funding as a result of this program. The federal ministry of digital affairs and transport will give the applicants in the Rhine-Ruhr region a total of 15 million euros, and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia’s ministry of economic affairs, industry, climate, and energy will give them an additional 15 million euros, to aid in the development of their installations.

Residual heat

On a 5,000 square meter plot, a 10 MW electrolysis facility is intended to be constructed. The district heating network (Iqony) will receive the heat produced during the electrolysis process. A higher level of sustainability is ensured by this use of residual heat.

Mobility industry

The estimated investment in this project is 30 million euros. Green hydrogen will begin to be produced in 2026, based on current plans. H2Mobility is being consulted by the parties over the purchase of the hydrogen. With more than 80 refueling stations in Germany, this company is the biggest hydrogen refueling provider in Europe. H2Mobility is constructing a filling station in Essen, close to the electrolyser, as part of this initiative, among other things. The close proximity of this customer is an additional benefit for VoltH2, which utilizes this green hydrogen for the local mobility sector.
