United Kingdom – ScottishPower and Storegga have teamed up to develop, build, and operate green hydrogen production plants across Scotland, with the potential to revolutionize industry and transportation in the Highlands.
The Cromarty Hydrogen Project, located just north of Inverness, will be the first to move forward. From 2024, the project is expected to deliver up to 20 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, with the potential to scale up to 300MW in a series of modular expansion phases, depending on customer demand. It will replace existing fossil fuel sources and allow for the supply of green hydrogen into distilleries’ heating processes, with additional applications in local manufacturing, food production, and industrial heating.
The Cromarty Hydrogen Project is the result of a feasibility study conducted by ScottishPower and Storegga in partnership with major distillers Diageo, Glenmorangie, and Whyte & Mackay, all of whom have operations in the Cromarty region.
‘Home-made’ hydrogen
Green hydrogen has obvious advantages in terms of energy supply security due to its ‘home-made’ nature. Green hydrogen is poised to transform the heavy transport sector across the country, with clean fuel potentially powering vehicles such as refuse collection trucks, buses, and HGVs, in addition to accelerating the potential for cleaner industrial heating processes. Green hydrogen can also be used as a clean alternative for rail, air, and shipping.
