Bilfinger helps MPREIS with hydrogen generating plant in Völs

Hydrogen

Austria – Bilfinger assisted MPREIS with the engineering, construction, and assembly of the piping systems for a hydrogen generation plant in Völs, near the Austrian city of Innsbruck.

Near its corporate headquarters, MPREIS is creating green hydrogen using renewable energy as part of the pilot project. The hydrogen is utilized to run the bakery and the fuel cell delivery vans. During the ramp-up phase, it will also be distributed to local partners and sold to other businesses in the area.

Scope of work

Bilfinger was in charge of building the plant as well as the mechanical assembly of the electrolyzer on-site. All pipelines for hydrogen, well water, wastewater, nitrogen, district heating, and thermal oil were included in this, along with their engineering, erection, and installation. The pumps and valves were also delivered by Bilfinger. The pipelines also received insulation work from Bilfinger’s Polish affiliate.

Demo4Grid

The project’s preliminary work was began back in 2016, and the electrolysis facility was successfully put into service last year. It will initially be utilized in the Austrian power grid as part of the EU project “Demo4Grid” to deliver balancing energy services. Long-term plans call for MPREIS to become the first Austrian medium-sized business to convert its whole fleet of vehicles to ones with alternative drive systems and to use hydrogen produced at the plant to guarantee zero-emission and carbon-neutral deliveries to its stores.
