Sweden – Vattenfall and SSAB have inked a letter of intent to usher in a new era of fossil-free steel production. The collaboration aims to leverage the HYBRIT technology in the transformation of the steel industry.

The primary objective of this collaboration is to deliver fossil-free steel, sourced from the HYBRIT pilot plant in Lulea, to Vattenfall for use in its own operations. Building upon the existing HYBRIT initiative launched in 2016, Vattenfall and SSAB are deepening their partnership to accelerate the shift towards fossil-free steelmaking. This collaboration seeks to not only provide Vattenfall with sustainable steel but also promote the widespread use of fossil-free steel across various industries.

HYBRIT technology

The HYBRIT technology, developed since 2016 by Hybrit Developmentā€”a joint venture of Vattenfall, SSAB, and LKABā€”employs a revolutionary approach to steel production. The process involves utilizing hydrogen instead of carbon, addressing one of the most carbon-intensive industries globally. By replacing traditional methods with this innovative approach, the partners aim to significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with steel production.

An ambitious target is set, requiring at least 10 percent of Vattenfall’s annual steel purchases to be fossil-free by 2030. The collaboration extends beyond material supply, encompassing sustainability calculations and life cycle assessments (LCA) of CO2 emissions.
