Finland – The Sustainable Technology Hub, a new technology center for Wärtsilä Corporation, has opened in Vaasa, Finland.
By fostering innovation, collaboration, and the development of green technologies using sustainable fuels and digital technologies, the new centre will contribute to efforts to advance global decarbonization of marine and energy systems.
Wärtsilä has already developed engines that run on carbon-neutral fuels. The company launched its Wärtsilä 32 Methanol engine this year, and an ammonia concept will be ready by 2023. In 2025, a hydrogen concept is expected to be available.
Decarbonization journey
The new centre’s construction was announced in 2018, with a total investment of around €250 million. It has a modern fuel laboratory, as well as flexible technology and engine testing facilities, as well as a production system with a high level of automation.
The Hub’s output will include a significant amount of innovation and the development of service solutions. Customers can rely on a new, modern Wärtsilä Land & Sea Academy training center, Customer Expertise Centres for remote operational support, predictive maintenance solutions, and the development of new digital innovations to help them optimize their operations and accelerate their decarbonization journey.
Customers, partner companies, and academia are invited to incubate, test, and validate ideas at the centre, which serves as a global ecosystem of collaboration.
