United States – Sulzer is enabling Blue Planet’s revolutionary carbon mineralization process for carbon capture, use, and storage (CCUS) solutions to be further developed and optimized.
The innovative technique will utilize Sulzer’s carbon reduction technologies to help cut greenhouse gas emissions from industrial activities, such as assisting the cement sector in producing carbon neutral or carbon negative concrete.
Ofseting CO2 from cement
Blue Planet is creating a profitable and sustainable CCUS system that absorbs CO2 from a variety of emission sources. Power, steel, cement, refining, direct air capture, and other CO2 emitting sectors are among them. By permanently sequestering the CO2 in a solid state that can be integrated into concrete, the technology mineralizes the CO2 to generate highly sustainable synthetic limestone aggregates. Aggregate is the major component of concrete (70ā€“90% ) and the most often used building material in the world. Cement holds aggregates together in concrete, which contributes significantly to world CO2 emissions (7 percent as per the International Energy Agency). The CO2 footprint of cement in concrete is more than offset by this method.
Sulzer assistance
Sulzer Chemtech is working on an efficient and effective carbon capture unit that will be a crucial enabler in Blue Planet’s process. This will be put in Blue Planet’s pilot plant in Pittsburg, California, USA, and will capture pollutants from a neighboring natural gas-fired power station. The plant will make use of Sulzer Chemtech’s technology, which provide strong CO2 absorption performance while consuming little energy.
