Axpo developing one of Sweden’s largest battery storages

Storage

Sweden – Axpo, a leading international utility company, has announced plans to develop one of the largest battery storage facilities in Sweden.

The facility, located in Filipstad and acquired from project developer SENS (Sustainable Energy Solutions Sweden), aims to provide ancillary services to enhance the balance and stability of the electricity grid. Construction is slated to commence in early 2024, marking a significant milestone in Sweden’s renewable energy landscape.

Project development

The 25 MW lithium-ion battery storage system will be situated approximately 300 km west of Stockholm in the town of Filipstad. Its primary purpose will be to offer ancillary services that support the grid’s equilibrium and reliability. Concurrently, Axpo will also continue the development of a ground-mounted solar plant with a capacity of up to 20 MW in the same location. Together, these projects will cover an expansive area of over 23 hectares (230,000 m2). SENS initiated the development of both ventures, which Axpo acquired on May 15, 2023. Axpo and SENS will collaborate on the development of these projects, with specific commercial terms remaining confidential.
