United Kingdom – Masdar Arlington Energy, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, has initiated construction on two new battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the UK.
The primary goal of Masdar’s investment in battery energy storage projects in the UK is to accelerate the transition to clean, sustainable energy sources while enhancing grid stability and reliability.
The BESS projects at Royle Barn Road in Rochdale and Welkin Road in Stockport will have a combined capacity of 55MW, capable of powering approximately 25,700 homes. These projects utilize advanced battery storage technology to capture and store excess electricity generated by renewable sources during periods of high production. The stored energy can then be released during times of peak demand or when renewable sources are unable to provide sufficient power, thereby optimizing energy utilization and grid performance.
Enabling renewable integration
The development of BESS projects by Masdar Arlington Energy not only contributes to the decarbonization of the UK’s energy sector but also stimulates economic growth by creating jobs and fostering innovation in clean energy technologies. By bolstering grid-level energy storage infrastructure, these projects enhance the reliability and resilience of the power grid, paving the way for greater integration of renewable energy and reducing reliance on carbon-intensive fossil fuels.
