The Netherlands – Project Castor, SemperPower’s second utility-scale energy storage project, is nearing the implementation phase.

With a capacity of 30 megawatts and an energy throughput of 63 megawatt hours, the battery system will be the largest in the Netherlands when it begins operations in the spring of 2023, and one of the largest in North-West Europe.

Incorporation of renewables

The battery system with a capacity of 30 MW/63 MWh will be utilized to supplement renewable energy portfolios. Project Castor will thus help to accelerate the incorporation of renewable energy into the Dutch electricity system.

Rolls-Royce has been chosen as the EPC partner, and will supply and build the battery system in the energy hub of North Sea Port in Vlissingen-Oost, which will have direct access to the Stedin network. Triodos Bank and the Dutch National Fund for Green Investments (Nationaal Groenfonds) are the project’s finance partners.

Dennis Schiricke, CEO of SemperPower said: “This is an important milestone in the development of our second utility scale battery energy storage project, at this time the largest battery project in the Netherlands. With Project Castor, SemperPower highlights its development capabilities, and together with our project partners we will play an important role in accelerating the energy transition.”
