TenneT awards €23B for eleven 2 GW North Sea grid connections

Renewables

The Netherlands/Germany – For the implementation of eleven 2 GW grid connections in the North Sea that will link German and Dutch offshore wind farms to their respective grids on land, TenneT has signed multiyear agreements worth over 23 billion euros with three consortia.

With 40 GW, TenneT will supply over two-thirds of the 65 GW offshore wind energy target for 2030 set by Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark in the Esbjerg Declaration from the North Sea Energy Summit in May 2022.

Hitachi and Petrofac, GE and Sembcorp Marine (SMOP), and GE and McDermott will connect offshore platforms and onshore substations to eight Dutch and three German offshore wind projects by 2031. Future HVDC stations are scheduled to be called off at a later date.

Projects

Five Dutch projects that will be connected in Borssele (IJmuiden Ver Alpha, Nederwiek 1), Eemshaven (Doordewind 1 and Doordewind 2), and Geertruidenberg or Moerdijk have been granted to Hitachi Energy/Petrofac (Nederwiek 3). The German connection LanWin5 that will be connected in Rastede will also be realized through this agreement.

Three Dutch projects that will be connected in Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, have been awarded to GE/SMOP (IJmuiden Ver Beta, IJmuiden Ver Gamma and Nederwiek 2).

The German projects BalWin4 and LanWin1, which will be connected in Unterweser, will be carried out by GE/McDermott. TenneT anticipates that the projects BalWin3, LanWin4, and LanWin2—all of which connect to the onshore grid in Wilhemshaven—will shortly be granted. To ensure that all projects can be completed by 2031, the selected suppliers will get to work right away on the projects’ preparation.

2GW program

Thanks to the 2GW Project, Europe’s energy revolution will accelerate. It will safely and affordably provide more green energy to Europe and its residents. The 2GW scheme includes a verified cable system and a standardized platform. It is crucial to the offshore energy revolution and will help Europe become the first climate-neutral continent.
