Maersk Supply Service mooring for Spanish DemoSATH floating wind

Renewables

Spain – The mooring system installation contract for the Saitec Offshore DemoSATH floating wind project has been awarded to Maersk Supply Service.

Saitec Offshore Technologies, the Spanish engineering firm behind the development of SATH Technology, has a contract with Maersk Supply Service. An FPSO-like Single Point Mooring is used in this design, which is based on a concrete platform concept. This anchoring system makes it simple to disconnect the platform and bring it ashore for maintenance. Reduced environmental forces and the cost of mooring can be achieved by allowing the platform to rotate freely around a single point. It also aids the turbine’s yaw control in orienting the rotor plane in the direction of the wind flow.

Custom solutions

There will be a 2MW turbine in a full-scale prototype that will be deployed off the coast of Bilbao and connected to the Spanish grid in the DemoSATH project. RWE Renewables, the world’s second-largest offshore wind power company, is helping to underwrite some of this project’s costs.

Maersk Supply Service provides custom solutions for floating wind farm foundations and substructures, including fabrication methodology, site selection for assembly and turbine installation, and offshore installation. This strategy has incorporated in-house project management and technical expertise along with the flexibility of owning a fleet to support the offshore energy sector’s transition to renewables since 2016.
