Denmark – Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) has established a dedicated subcommittee to develop a global standard contract for the transport and installation of offshore wind turbines.

The initiative, known as Windseacon, comes at a pivotal time as the demand for renewable energy sources continues to surge worldwide. With offshore wind emerging as a key player in the renewable energy landscape, there is a pressing need for a standardized contractual framework to facilitate efficient and effective project execution.

The decision to embark on the Windseacon project was driven by extensive consultations with approximately 65 key stakeholders in the offshore wind sector. These consultations highlighted the prevalent use of hybrid contracts, blending elements of construction contracts with BIMCOā€™s Supplytime charter party. It became evident that a tailored, commercially viable standard contract was essential to address the specific requirements of the offshore wind industry.

The Windseacon contract aims to provide clarity and certainty in legal and commercial negotiations, thereby enhancing project efficiency and reducing transaction costs. At its core, the Windseacon contract focuses on the transportation and installation phases of offshore wind projects, addressing key challenges encountered in these critical stages of development. The subcommittee tasked with developing the contract will draw upon the expertise of industry leaders to ensure that the framework meets the diverse needs of stakeholders across the globe.

With Windseacon, BIMCO aims to set the benchmark for contractual excellence in the offshore wind sector, paving the way for smoother and more efficient project execution in the transition to renewable energy.
