Finland – Along its western coast, Finland intends to begin five competitive procurement processes for more than 6GW of offshore wind energy.
The projects, put out by the state-owned Metsahallitus company in Finland, are expected to be completed in the 2030s and cover the west-coast towns of Siikajoki, Hailuoto, Pyhäjoki, Raahe, Närpiö, and Kristiinankaupunki.
After receiving approval, Metsahallitus will announce a call for bids for two projects in September–October 2023, with two more projects to follow in 2024. The fifth project’s final bid will be chosen later.
Another competitive, open, and non-discriminatory procurement process will be used to choose the partners for the development and operation of the planned offshore wind farms.
Preliminary studies
In preliminary research, every location has been determined to be appropriate for offshore wind power generation. The regions have ideal water depths, seabed geological structures, options for electrical transmission, and shipping lanes. The Finnish Defense Forces have also given their consent for the designated zones.
