Germany – EnBW’s final investment decision paves the way for the start of construction on He Dreiht, its largest offshore wind farm to date, with a capacity of 960 megawatts (MW).
One of Europe’s greatest energy transition projects is currently this offshore wind farm, which receives no subsidies. He Dreiht’s investment cost is about €2.4 billion. By the end of 2025, it should be up and running. Then, He Dreiht will produce enough green electricity to power 1.1 million comparable homes.
Power purchase agreements
With He Dreiht, EnBW has already secured a number of long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with renowned businesses like Fraport, Evonik, Salzgitter, and Bosch, totaling 335 MW in volume. There are ongoing discussions with other businesses.
EnBW has obtained an additional €600 million in long-term funding for this significant project from the European Investment Bank, one of the leading financiers of climate and environmental initiatives in the world.
The wind farm
The He Dreiht wind farm, which is situated about 110 kilometres west of Heligoland and about 85 kilometres northwest of the island of Borkum, is anticipated to be operational by the end of 2025. EnBW will be in charge of technical, commercial, and maintenance management once everything is finished.
Nearby are the offshore wind farms owned by EnBW, Hohe See and Albatros. This proximity and the existing service hub in the coastal town of Emden will be advantageous to He Dreiht. The installation of 64 newest-generation Vestas wind turbines is the aim. They provide He Dreiht with a 960 MW total installed generating capacity. As a result, He Dreiht’s guaranteed 900 MW of grid connection capacity can be fully exploited.
