United Kingdom – Dutch Van Oord has been hired for Sofia offshore wind farm engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of the monopile foundations and array cables.
Through its UK branch MPI Offshore, Van Oord will create a logistics hub to deliver the scope of work. Offshore installation vessel Aeolus will be deployed to install the 100 extended monopile foundations without transition pieces. The 350 kilometres of array cables will be installed by cable-laying vessel Nexus.
Van Oord will sub-contract the fabrication of the foundations and array cables. The project will be executed by Van Oord Offshore Wind UK from their MPI Offshore office in Stokesley Teesside.
Sofia offshore wind farm
The 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind farm is one of the worldā€™s largest offshore wind projects, and the largest one in RWE’s current development portfolio. RWE has recently taken the financial investment decision on the project.
Sofia is sited on Dogger Bank in the central North Sea, 195 kilometres from the North East coast of the UK. The onshore construction works are due to start in Spring in Teesside and offshore construction in 2023. Final project completion is expected by the end of 2026.
