Nissan expanding renewable energy at Sunderland Plant

United Kingdom – Nissan has revealed plans for a massive expansion of renewable energy production at its plant in Sunderland, UK.

In addition to current wind turbines and solar power plants, the planned expansion of the 20MW solar farm marks a further phase in Nissan’s journey to carbon neutrality.

Panel expansion

If accepted, the 37,000-panel expansion will result in 20% of the plant’s electricity coming from all on-site renewables, enough to create every single zero-emission Nissan LEAF sold in Europe.

The solar farm is being designed and built by Engenera, a partner company. The first phase in the process is a community meeting that begins this week, with a complete planning proposal scheduled to follow later this year.

Carbon neutrality

Nissan has set itself the target of achieving carbon neutrality through the company’s activities and the life cycle of its vehicles by 2050. As part of this initiative, any new Nissan product offering in key markets will be electrified by early 2030, as well as advances in electrification and manufacturing technologies will be introduced.
