Wärtsilä support CMA CGM’s maritime operations decarbonization

France Wärtsilä has been chosen once more to provide a broad range of solutions for new LNG-fueled container ships ordered by CMA CGM, a global leader in shipping and logistics headquartered in France.

This latest series consists of 12 container ships that will be built in China. Six 13,000 TEU container vessels are being built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, while six 15,000 TEU container vessels are being built at Jiangnan Shipyard. The significant orders were placed in the third and fourth quarters of 2021.

The Wärtsilä equipment is expected to be delivered to the yards in 2022, with the first of the 12 vessels set to launch in Q3 2023. Wärtsilä was previously contracted to supply a similar scope for nine 23K TEU CMA CGM vessels that have been delivered, as well as five 15K TEU vessels, two of which have been delivered and three of which are currently under construction.

CMA CGM is emphasizing its support for efforts to decarbonize maritime operations by contracting these ships to run on LNG fuel rather than conventional marine diesel fuel. LNG eliminates almost all air pollutants, including sulphur oxides (Sox: -99%), nitrogen oxides (NOx: -92%), and particulates (PM10: -91%), and is a first step toward decarbonization. The vessels’ dual-fuel gas engines are already compatible with renewable energies like biomethane, synthetic methane, and e-methane.

Wärtsilä solutions have all been chosen for their high efficiency and environmental sustainability. They include five Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel auxiliary engines for each vessel, for a total of 60 engines delivered from the Chinese joint venture, Wärtsilä’s Nacos Platinum integrated control system, propulsion control system, STC-13 series Sewage Treatment Plants, and a Fuel Gas Supply System outfitted with Wärtsilä’s Operational Performance Improvement and Monitoring (Operim) system. This uses cutting-edge digital technology to provide data in real-time, allowing the system to operate at peak efficiency at all times and in all weather and sea conditions.
