Neste invests in renewable products refinery in Rotterdam

Oil&Gas

The Netherlands – Neste, a Finnish company, has announced plans to expand the production of renewable products at its refinery in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, by investing €1.9 billion ($2.01 billion).

As concerns over climate change grow, the Finnish biofuel producer is making the move to meet the rising demand for renewable products, according to Reuters. The refinery’s capacity to produce renewable products will rise from its current level of 1.4 million tons per year (Mtpa) to 2.7 Mtpa as a result of the expansion project.

Renewable products

The refinery will be installing a new production unit as part of the expansion project. The refinery will be able to produce 1.2 million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) out of its total refining capacity.

In the first half of 2026, the Finnish company intends to begin operations at the new renewable products unit. Using its patented NEXBTL technology, Neste transforms renewable fats and oils into renewable products like fuel and feedstock for making chemicals and polymers. The refinery, which is situated in the Maasvlakte section of the Port of Rotterdam, began manufacturing renewable products in 2011.
