Indonesia/The Netherlands – Inpex Masela has recently awarded Dutch Fugro a significant marine survey contract for the Abadi liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Indonesia.

Fugro will undertake geophysical and geotechnical surveys essential for the front-end engineering design of offshore production facilities, the submarine pipeline to the onshore LNG terminal, and CO2 injection infrastructure. Leveraging technologies such as Fugroā€™s deepwater autonomous underwater vehicle Echo Surveyor 8 and robotic seafloor drill, the surveys will provide critical data for project planning and execution. Fieldwork is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2024.

Driving sustainability

The Abadi LNG project represents a strategic collaboration between Inpex, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Masela, and Petronas Masela Sdn Bhd in the Masela block of Indonesia. With an anticipated annual LNG production of 9.5 million tons, equivalent to over 10 percent of Japanā€™s current annual LNG imports, the project holds significant potential to enhance energy security in Indonesia, Japan, and other Asian nations. Moreover, its incorporation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology underscores a commitment to sustainability and emissions reduction.
